For your buoyancy aid to fit properly it should be snug to your body and doesn't rise up to your chin when pulled up or when in the water. If it is an adjustable one then the straps should be tightened to keep it close to your body, if you can't get it tight then the buoyancy aid is probably too large.
A few other important checks:
- Make sure your buoyancy aid is certified for your current weight
- Ensure that none of the foam has deteriorated
- Inspect it for any rips, tears or chemical burns which may affect its performance
- Check all the buckles work correctly if there are any
