Craftinsure Supernova Traveller Series at Winsford Flash Sailing Club

by Pete Coop 23 Jun 2023 06:17 BST 17 June 2023

A fantastic turnout of 28 Supernovas attended the Craftinsure Northern travellers event with the 14 visitors coming from as far afield as Cotswold, Bolton, Girton, Blithfield, Bartley and Nottingham.

The fleet was met with a light South Easterly wind - a good direction for the Flash allowing John Close and his race team to set a simple course.

Unusually for the Supernova fleet, start 1 was aborted due to too many boats over the line with 10 seconds to go. The fleet were well behaved for the re - start with Andrew Flitcroft sailing away to a commanding lead. Throughout the rest of the fleet positions were changing right up to the last beat with local sailor Pete Coop coming in second and Tony Critchley third.

Lunch was a hearty affair with Cottage pie followed by apple Pie and sticky toffee pudding - Winsford included this as part of the entry which was well received by the Sailors - Big thanks to Charlotte Coop and her team for great catering.

Race 2 was met with a slight increase in wind - Tony Critchley sailed off to a big lead with Steve Hawley heading up the rest in second with Gavin Young coming into play with a third.

With 2 different winners of race 1 and 2 it was all to play for going into the last race. Gavin Young broke away at the start and was never reeled in - Steve Hawley (recovering well from a 720 on the start line) in second and Alex Reeve third.

So, with Gavin, Tony and Steve all tied with 4 points it was down to sailwave to break the tie - in the end it was Gavin on top once again counting the best score of the last race.

Racing was close throughout the day with a good Supernova spirit of no protests, as boats that had infringed were doing their penalty turns.

George Coop won the youth prize and Pete Chambers won the prize for the first MK1.

Thanks go to the Winsford team for all of their efforts in hosting and the very credible 14 home boat turnout!
