DF95 Global Championship 2023 at Fleetwood Model Yacht Club - Overall

by Derek Priestley 24 May 2023 18:40 BST 12-19 May 2023

We had 78 competitors from 15 countries who completed 22 races each (that's 88 heats, about 100 starts including several general recalls with i and black flags used occasionally!).

Mostly the sailors were well behaved but sometimes a windward gate (in/out) was used after several port/starboard pileups at the windward mark. Most races lasted approx 12mins. Wind strength varied from 6 to 18 knots and A, B and C rigs were used.

All competitors went home tired but happy after the grand prize-giving & awards ceremony in the North Euston Hotel Ballroom.

For the weekend we did something rather more genteel, racing Classic & Vintage 'free sailing' Marbleheads. These boats date mainly from the 1950s to the mid 1970s and eleven boats took part.

We raced Saturday and Sunday in very light winds but a full tournament of racing was completed. Overall winner, and winner of the classic class, was Derek Priestley of Fleetwood MYC with a 1970s Clem Edwards designed and built boat. Winner of the vintage class was Derek Moreland of the Gosport MYC with a beautiful self-restored Stan Witty "Wasp" design from the late 1950s.
