May can be an interesting month weather wise at Bala Sailing Club and with the club season well under way, water levels have stabilised and it is normally time for our Catamaran Open. With six races over the two days and a 1pm start on the Saturday to allow people time to travel and rig, this multihulls open saw a great showing of Nacras and Shearwaters in 2022.

It would be great to see more boats take to our wonderful lake in 2023 and with some major renovations to our clubhouse over the winter we would love to welcome more visitors to this spectacular venue in North Wales. Whilst a lot of our racing members favour monohulls, we have seen a gradual increase in multihulls and with a lot of boats (and members) relocating to our club when Bala Catamaran Club unfortunately lost their venue a few years ago; our foreshore has been steadily growing in numbers within this class.

For those of you who have not sailed at Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), it is an incredible setting at just under 4 miles long and 3/4 mile wide surrounded by the most incredible backdrop. The 2022 open saw 20 boats line up, with Paul Allen and Andy Todd (Nacra F18 - Bala SC) taking overall honours from Mike Allen and Max Tellwright (Nacra 17c foils - Bala SC) closely followed by Liz Howell and various crews (Nacra F18 - Tresaith Mariners SC).

Entries can be made online and for further information you can contact the Commodore on with any other questions.

Entry for the weekend is £25 for single handed and £35 for double handed (crew) with a 50% discount on both for juniors.

Visitors have a range of camping sites nearby and the club has a large foreshore where boats can be stored over the weekends event. Access to the club is via a secure gate with access codes being provided on entry. A live band is planned for the Saturday evening along with a meal and the galley will be open all weekend providing access to breakfast, lunch and snacks after racing concludes.

Whether you have visited us before or a new visitor, we look forward to welcoming you.

Zephyrus causing trouble here and there The forecast for Saturday was looking a bit dodgy, with a range of 4 to 0 knots. Zephyrus was the Greek God of the West wind. Would he turn up or would he hide in the hills? It left a difficult sail size choice for Pippa Evans. Posted on 25 Jul
