Setley Cup 2000 Junior Model Boat Race Overall Report

Setley Cup 2000 - Junior Model Boat Race

In recent years, Setley Pond Cup helms have braved ice, snow, and high wind. This year it was the high water level that posed the greatest challenge. The car park was under about 300mm of water and since much of the pond perimeter was inaccessible, the usual ‘there and back’ course had to be shortened to a one-way trip.

Twenty helms waded to the start with their yachts: 9 multihulls and 11 monohulls. The Multis were racing for the Seahorse Trophy and the Monos for the original Setley Cup. A series of three races was completed with one discard applied.

Unusually, the Multis were more successful, with almost every entrant finishing at least one race. Sarah Kemlow’s Jardine design won all three races, with Toby Ng, Alania Bennett and Tristan Kemp all showing consistent form. Rupert Stock’s design showed late potential, scoring a second in the final race.

The Monohulls faired less well with only 4 of the 9 entrants finishing a race - the gusty conditions proving too much for most. Jack Clifford won all 3 race with another Jardine design. Hannah Muskett and Hattie Pitts each scored at least one finish each, Andy Russell-Smith made an impression with his coconut boat, coming second overall, and showing that the ability to finish can count for more than outright speed.

Annie Littlejohn presented the trophies, and moments later the assembled crowd had escaped the cold north wind, for the warmth of their cars. For the 2001 race there will be an additional trophy - a constructor’s prize for design and construction.
