Ovington 2021 - ILCA 3 - LEADERBOARD

Noble Marine & Ovington UKLA ILCA 6 Spring Qualifier 3 at the WPNSA

by Carys Attwell 28 Mar 23:49 BST 25-26 March 2023

With south westerly big breeze we were held onshore until the wind settled down and then followed the ILCA 7s into the harbour. A windward leeward course and an added spreader mark was set.

The first race began with Ollie Allen-Wilcox coming off the pin to lead the fleet into the left corner. Freddie Howarth had a strong start slightly further up the pin, also going left and rounded the windward mark just behind Ollie. Downwind was a pressure game, and the go-right gate was biased but the fleet continued back to left side upwind to get lifted into the mark. Wilcox finished first followed by Howarth and Hacker.

Race two was a similar speed game with both Wilcox and Jon Emmett coming off the pin and heading left to lead into the windward mark. With Jon leading downwind, Wilcox overtook him to take his second race win, Emmett finished second and Howarth third. Well done to all competitors who raced in some challenging breeze and thanks to the race team.

Sunday brought a change in wind direction and no wind early morning. After a 2 hour postponement and several trips to Lidl, the fleet launched just before lunch to 10 knots north westerly with the wind building throughout the day. Back to our normal trapezium course, the ILCA 6 fleet sailed the inner loop with three races scheduled.

In the first race of the day Jack Graham Troll won the pin, heading left and then crossing the fleet to work the left and lead in at the windward mark. With the pressure in the corners, Howarth came in second with Emmett, Wilcox and Charlotte Videlo close behind. On the second beat Howarth went right with Graham Troll working the middle, just leading into the mark. Howarth sailed into first downwind with Emmett and Wilcox catching Graham Troll on the reach to take second and third, and Videlo in fifth.

In the second race, after a general recall, Wilcox came off the starboard end and was lifted to the left where he tacked on a nice left shift leading the race just ahead of Emmett and Christopher Marsh. Wilcox took another bullet to secure the event win with one race to spare.

The final race saw Emmett, Jon Gay, Freddie Sunderland and Carys Attwell work the left of the beat coming from some pin bias. Emmett led the race with Archie Burton, Joe Rowe, Wilcox and Videlo not far behind and the left shift on the second beat decided the finishing order Emmett, Burton, Rowe.

All in all, a great weekend of racing. The ILCA 6 fleet would like to thank the race team and safety team along with Pamela Cross for all her work on the prize-giving (the booms were a great surprise!) A quick mention for John Gay who, as a master, managed a top ten finish.

Thanks to Ovington as primary sponsor of the weekend and Rooster, Sailingfast and Noble Marine for sponsoring the qualifiers. See you all at the Nationals!
