MC38 Series Act 2 at Middle Harbour Yacht Club

by Tilly McKnight 13 Mar 09:06 GMT 11-12 March 2023

The second act of the 2023 MC38 Season has concluded, and it was a weekend of intense competition and thrilling yacht racing. Hosted at Middle Harbour Yacht Club, the event drew in seven teams, who were ready to display their skill and strategy with some of the best sailors in the league in the mix.

Over the course of two days, a total of six races were held, with sailors battling against each other and challenging weather conditions to secure the top spots on the leaderboard. Saturday had a delayed start due to a lack of breeze, but sailors were finally able to take to the water at midday, with 8-10 knots of E-N-E breeze.

Leap AU (Katie Spithill) dominated the pin in Race 1, while Hooligan (Marcus Blackmore) broke the line before the start signal, resulting in a penalty. Leap AU went on to win Race 1, with InfoTrack Go (Christian Beck) and Infotrack (Indy Beck) coming in second and third place. Race 2 saw the breeze building, and it was Ginger (Leslie Green) who claimed the top spot, with InfoTrack and Law Connect (Rachel Beck) following closely behind.

At the end of Saturday's racing, a family-friendly barbecue was held on the beach, providing a great opportunity for sailors, friends, and family to unwind after a long day of racing.

Sunday saw different conditions, with 18-20 knots of Sou'East breeze building in the harbour.

Race 4 had a strong lead from Ginger, who led the bottom mark with Dye & Durham Thor (Matthew Hanning) closely behind. However, it was Hooligan who ultimately triumphed, with Ginger coming in second and Dye & Durham Thor in third place.

Race 5 saw a dominant Hooligan secure another win, followed closely by consistent Ginger and Dye & Durham Thor.

As the sailors prepared for the final race, all eyes were on the podium with Hooligan, Ginger and InfoTrack all fighting for the top spot. The pressure was on and in the heat of Race 6, InfoTrack withdrew from the race leaving the battle between Hooligan and Ginger.

Hooligan, securing another bullet, ended the day with a flawless scoreboard but it Ginger's persistence and boat handling that saw them become the Act 2 Champions.
