Promethient, the Michigan-based provider of human-scaled climate control systems, has launched its Thermavance™ seat cooling and heating technology for the marine industry.

An industry first, Thermavance allows seats exposed to the elements to be cooled or heated by one graphene-based system that can be packaged within almost any seat design.

Thermavance's greatest advantage is that it efficiently cools and heats the seat occupant using conductive heat transfer. Traditional heated seats rely on resistive wire technology that is unable to provide cooling. Automotive-style ventilated seats rely on less efficient convective heat transfer that moves air through perforations in the seat surface - the perforations make the seat vulnerable to damage by exposure to the elements and spills.

Promethient's Thermavance system combines solid state heat pumping provided by a thermoelectric device, or a "Peltier Device," with graphene. Graphene is a carbon-based material that exhibits high thermal conductivity that is greater than that of copper. Critically, graphene is flexible, lightweight and durable making it ideal for use in surfaces that must be flexible and able to conform to the human body.

"The marine industry is a natural fit for Thermavance," said Bill Myers, CEO of Promethient. "Boat owners and our guests frequently encounter those days that are uncomfortably hot or cold and our solution greatly enhances thermal comfort. Thermavance technology is well-suited for seating installations exposed to the elements as well as those within the cabin. Low power requirement also lends our technology to electric boats that will demand higher overall efficiency to optimize range."

The company launched Thermavance seat cooling and heating technology with a major powersports vehicle manufacturer in 2020. Promethient is currently preparing for product launches with a variety of OE manufacturers and seat suppliers in the marine, off-highway equipment, powersports and arena seating markets.
