2023 Contender World Championship at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club - Day 1

by Ed Presley 16 Jan 2023 16:07 GMT 16-20 January 2023

The 2023 Contender World Championship hosted by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club on the glorious waters of Perth's Swan River is underway.

Plenty of swims and damage, almost unsailable amounts of breeze, so of course the Contenders went out.

A strong south westerly breeze turned it on and sailors fought hard in the conditions. Coverage today was interrupted as the media rib was required for safety duties following the bottom mark carnage. All sailors safely delivered to shore, all boats safe to fight another day.

In amongst the terror, the racing remained close, Matty Mulder continuing his upward trajectory from the nationals with a bullet. Mark Bulka came back from a swim to take second with Andre Webster staying safe in third.
