Doyle powered maxi yachts, Andoo Comanche and LawConnect have placed first and second on line honours in the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The annual Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race consistently brings the best yachts and sailors to Sydney, where they all begin their journey south to Hobart on Boxing Day hoping to win arguably two of the world’s most recognisable sailing trophies in the world – the Tattersall Cup for the overall IRC winner and the John H Illingworth Challenge Cup for the boat that takes line honours and reaches Hobart first.

This year a total of four super maxi’s vied for line honours. After an intense battle to lead out of the Sydney heads on Boxing Day with Andoo Comanche and Wild Oats XI doing penalty turns. It was Andoo Comanche that consistently led the fleet south, followed closely by Law Connect.

Andoo Comanche took an easterly course for the first 100nm of the 605nm race, before gybing, with Law Connect on the same track, before gybing come back close to the Rhumb line course to Hobart. At that point just over 8 hrs after the start, Andoo Comanche was ahead of the race record.

However they slowed to 19kts relative to LDV Comanche on her 2017 course, who at that point was sailing at 22kts on a more direct position for the finish.

After an impressive burst of speed closing in on Tasman Island Andoo Comanche crossed the finish line 0056 AEST, for a time of 35hrs 56 minutes on 28th December, almost three hours outside her race record, set in 2017 of 33hrs 25 minutes.

LawConnect (Christian Beck) followed almost 90 minutes later, followed by 2021 Line Honours winner Black Jack (Peter Harburg with Mark Bradford) and Hamilton Island Wild Oats (The Oatley Family and Mark Richards), fourth home.

Andoo Comanche and Law Connect were flying a protest flags as they crossed the finish line, and all results results are provisional.
