RS Aero UK Youth Team Winter Training at Burghfield Sailing Club

by Mark Ripley 13 Dec 2022 14:23 GMT 10-11 December 2022

The RS Aero UK Youth Team Training at Burghfield was always set to be a cold one, looking at forecasts beforehand.

Nevertheless, the Team still turned up in numbers, optimistic to get some sailing done and learn some useful tips and tricks from our excellent coaches, Sammy and George.

Saturday morning saw a cold, light and slightly frozen over Burghfield lake which encouraged us to keep our feet on dry land for a while! A rather long fitness session from George followed by some theory work on sail shapes and controls kept the morning useful for all. The sun came out and the breeze rose slightly, resulting in an early lunch and a chance to get in some good sailing. A nice light wind session saw 1 or 2 accidental swimmers in what looked like arctic waters as the day finished off with some warm soup and great facilities thanks to Burghfield Sailing Club.

Sunday morning looked a lot less promising. Wind was fair however, and despite visibility being poor and temperatures being very low, both coaches were optimistic to get out on the water. Unfortunately however the wind did not hold. Despite this, day was not wasted as we had a very beneficial session ashore including the theory and anatomy of a gust. We finished early on what had been a very cold weekend.

The RS Aero UK Youth Team next meets in the Midlands at Draycote on 21/22nd January. Come and join the group and lets hope for some great conditions!
