2022 Star South American Championship at Yacht Club Argentino - Day 1

by Rachele Vitello 9 Dec 2022 06:06 GMT 7-11 December 2022

The 2022 Star South American Championship has started Thursday and will end on Sunday December 11th in Buenos Aires, Argentina, organized by the Yacht Club Argentino at the Dársena Norte with the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association.

The South American Star Championship has been held since 1952. In Buenos Aires, the South Americans were held in 2019, before the pandemic and the title went to the duo Tomas Hornos (USA) and Pedro Trouche (BRA). There is no shortage of big names of the sailing world also this year, like the two Star World Champion crews Frithjof Kleen (GER) and Samuel Gonçalves (BRA), and the Brazilians Marcelo Fuchs runner-up World Champion in 2015 and Arthur Lopes, South American champion.

Day one started with the skippers briefing under the Corna Badaracco, and after the final touches, the fleet was sent on the water.

The first starting began on time at 1pm as scheduled, and the second one followed right after, both run in front of the Port of Buenos Aires, in a torrid day, with hot wind coming from the north with an intensity of 8/9 knots.

The first bullet went to Borgstrom/Engelhard (ARG) and the second to the Altolaguirre brothers (ARG), Leandro and Lucas, who are now leading the 25-boat fleet. They are closely followed by the duo Fabian Mac Gowan and Mauricio Bueno (ARG), and in third place is the sailor and World-renowned naval architect, Juan Kouyoumdjian with Fernando Rivero.

At the end of the day, there was an After Race party under the Corna Badaracco with drinks and a delicious meal as a treat for the competitors.

Friday is forecast to be another beautiful day for sailing in Buenos Aires, with two more races scheduled.

Pivot on this
I despise the way ‘pivot' got used as many times as those wretched QR codes... Yes indeed. As much as I would hate to take people back to the COVID era, that's exactly what I've just done. Making that problematic trip back in time look good, is how much I despise the way ‘pivot' got used as many times as those wretched QR codes. Posted on 2 Nov
