Medway RC Laser Club Winter Series Day 1

by Jamie Blair 5 Dec 2022 11:25 GMT 4 December 2022

The 2022/23 winter Series has a 17 race programme taking us through December and ending in March 2023.

Nine boats arrived at the start area to a NNE 10-15 knots. A windward triangle/sausage course was set. We welcomed Lucien Stone using the Owens boat (75). Having not been used for a while the morning was plagued with range and electrical issues.

On the gun for Race 1 all were using C Rigs. Jon Moon, Mark Penny and Tony Alexander set the pace not only for this race but the next two. Rule observance was good, and penalty turns taken. Keep it up. "Sorry" was also heard on a number of occasions (including Lucien)! The beat was a bit one sided leading to a number coming to the windward mark on the port lay line but sensible sailing saw only a few infringements. The leg to the spreader passed through the lee of the café providing opportunity to gain an overlap before the wing mark. The run leg with the gusting breeze questioned the C rig choice when the jump in strength was like a slap on the sail!

Seven races were completed before the coffee break. Jamie had come back to the three leaders and after race 5 had made it to the top.

However, at the break Jamie, Mark Penny and Jon Moon were level on points. The next boats were also having their own race with Andrew Nicholls leading that pack and only 3 points separating them.

Numbers were depleted after the break with Jon and Tony having to go off to prearranged events. 7 more races were started after the break with Jamie and Mark racing hard in all. Missing the leeward mark in Race 10 allowed Jamie to grab the win. This would be crucial in the overall for the day with the last race being the decider between the two. Jamie won the last race and the day by 2 points from Mark. With Jon and Tony leaving at the break Andrew picked up some great results to take 3rd.

The next set of races will be on Sunday 11th December.

With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct

With the wind forever increasing in strength a couple of 'D' rigs were brought out The showers had just about died out on arrival, to leave us with a nice Blowy Westerly. No need for the big sails today and it was a decider for the next 2 sail sizes, giving us a mix for the first couple of races. Posted on 18 Jun

No question on rig size - the smallest D rigs were chosen For today's racing the wind was very much in the upper numbers. The forecast was for it to drop but with 20 - 25 knits and direction NW. No question on rig size - the smallest D rig. Posted on 27 Mar

Course allows boats to be closer than normal and with more possible infringements The Race Team using the wind direction of SE and 8 knots speed set a narrow course with a wing mark to form the triangle for the triangle sausage format. This effectively gave two downwind legs, a reach along the leeward end of the course and two beats. Posted on 27 Feb
