Seven friendly events for sailors of all levels of experience

The UK Flying Fifteen Association has announced the dates of their Southern Traveller Series events for 2023 which are open to all types of Flying Fifteen: Classic, Silver and Gold fleet boats. These events are especially welcoming to club-level sailors and those not wishing to travel too far, and perhaps offer a less intimidating experience than competing at the big national Flying Fifteen events.

The series consists of a real mix of venues and sailing experiences: tidal river estuaries - Aldeburgh & Burnham-on-Crouch, large reservoirs - Chew Valley & Datchet, a mid-sized lake - Middle Nene, and a couple of puddles - South Cerney & Broxbourne.

All are welcoming family-orientated clubs which take very good care of visitors!

  • Datchet Sailing Club - 15th - 16th April 2023
  • Aldeburgh YC - 3rd - 4th June 2023
  • Middle Nene SC - 10th - 11th June 2023
  • Burnham on Crouch (RCYC) - 17th- 18th June 2023
  • Chew Valley Lake SC - 2nd - 3rd September 2023
  • South Cerney SC - 9th -10th September 2023
  • Broxbourne SC - 7th - 8th October 2023

Prizes are awarded at each event and the Flying Fifteen fleet handicapping system will be in operation meaning that all boats compete on a level playing field. In addition, competitors taking part in at least two events will qualify for the overall Southern Traveller series results, where separate Gold, Silver & Classic fleet prizes will also be awarded.

Please visit the UK Flying Fifteen website - www.flying15.org.uk - for more information about the series, or if you are short of a crew or need help with accommodation.

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 overall
Studies in concentration A lot happened on the final day of Poole Week 2024. The wind was in one of its light and fickle moods, the tide was ebbing for the first starts, and the harbour was busy with traffic that had been mercifully light earlier in the week. Posted on 31 Aug

The wind returns It might be in the realms of fantasy to imagine that what one writes in the report of one day's racing in a regatta could conceivably have a bearing on what the weather gods dish up the next day. Posted on 30 Aug
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 Day 4
Fickle winds and fluctuating fortunes Wednesday was to have been a day of round-the-harbour courses for most of the fleets racing in Poole Week. The Dolphins and Cornish Shrimpers tend to sail round-the-harbour courses anyway - none of this triangle/sausage business for them. Posted on 29 Aug

Blow the wind Southerly (sometimes with a bit of East in it too) Poole Harbour was very much a harbour of two halves on the Tuesday of Poole Week. In the top triangle, sailing area for the Flying Fifteens and ILCAs (Lasers in old money), the wind started in the south and pretty well stayed there. Posted on 28 Aug

A windy welcome to the week Has anyone noticed that 2024 has been rather breezy? Last year, some regattas and championships were struggling with lack of wind. That hasn't been a problem on the whole this year. Posted on 26 Aug

Six Sailmakers Sew Slick Sails
Latest developments from the multiple sailmakers active in the Flying Fifteen class The recent 2024 Nationals hosted by Strangford Loch Yacht Club in Northern Ireland provided some great sailing for all competitors. It was interesting to see (by my count) six sailmakers represented and each with at least one boat in the top ten! Posted on 12 Aug
