Halloween Cup Optimist at Circolo Vela Torbole - Overall

by Elena Giolai 2 Nov 2022 17:45 GMT 30 October - 1 November 2021

The Halloween Cup Optimist class closed the sailing season on Garda Trentino-lake Garda - Italy in style: a record number of participants (614 from 22 nations), record heat for this period and strong wind on the second day ensured an edition, the tenth, to remember.

The event, organised by the Circolo Vela Torbole, with the contribution of the Race Officials and Jury staff of the Italian Sailing Federation and the Garda Trentino Vela Consortium for everything related to the electric buoys, took place over three days of racing, with seven races for the junior category (four qualifying and three finals) and four for the cadets in varied conditions, since after the 25 knots on Monday morning, on the last day there were calmer conditions, allowing the cadets to go out early, who with Tuesday's three races, together with Monday's race, reached the minimum number to apply a discard.

On the final day the Juniors were divided according to the overall qualifying ranking with the best 121 entering the gold fleet. The lighter wind changed the final general classification a little, deciding the podium positions: the winner of the Easter Meeting, Sviatoslav Madonich (Ukraine), repeated himself, winning by four points ahead of Erik Scheidt (Fraglia Vela Riva, Lithuania) from Lake Garda, who was well focused on getting on the podium.

The Americans Wylder Smith and James Pine finished third and fourth respectively, with Smith tied with Scheidt, while for Pine the light wind caused him to lose the lead he had gained after four races at 25 knots.

The Italians made a great recovery, moving up 4-5 positions: the best Alberto Avanzini (CN Bardolino) finished in fifth place overall; then Christian Girani (Circolo Vela Muggia) and Alessandro Maria Ricci (LNI Ostia Lido), sixth and seventh respectively. Also in the top ten were Leonardo Grossi and Marco Emanuele (Fraglia Vela Riva), who were instrumental, along with Victoria Demurtas' twelfth place overall (and first female), in helping their club, Fraglia Vela Riva, win the Halloween Cup Trophy, awarded to the club with the best four juniors. The female ranking was completed by the second place of the Ukrainian Olha Lubianska and the third of Sofia Berteotti (Fraglia Vela Riva).

A very short classification in the Cadets category, with 4 helmsmen within 1 point: David Hruby (Czech Republic) won with a 5-6-2-1, one point ahead of Nicolò Santoro (Triestina della Vela).

Next up were the two very fierce Vittoria Berteotti and Ginevra Rovaglia, third and fourth overall respectively, with the same score as Santoro. Naturally Vittoria and Ginevra also climbed the first two steps of the women's podium, while third place went to the Ukrainian Ahnieshka Madonich, sister of the junior winner Sviatoslav.

It is worth mentioning the excellent partials of Poland's Pola Wojcik, second in regatta 2 and Ukraine's Vyevyenko, first in regatta 3, as well as Paolo Bellofiore (ITA), second in the fourth and final regatta. A good third in regatta 4 also for Carlo Miraglia (ITA).
