2022 ILCA U21 World Championships at Villamora, Portugal - Day 4

by Katie Olsen 27 Aug 2022 07:51 BST 21-28 August 2022

Three races were completed on Friday at the 2022 ILCA U21 World Championships. The day started with about 6-7 knots of wind, however it died soon after, so the race committee abandoned the first race.

The breeze then picked back up to 6-7 knots and continued to build to 11 knots, which was enough to get off three successful races in just before the sunset. With the lighter wind today, there were some shake-ups and new names on the leaderboard.

In the men's division, the top five sailors all appeared to have two consistent finishes, and one dropped race from today's scores. Great Britain's Kai Wolgram began the day with a 33rd, but followed with a seventh and second to sit in first overall. In a similar fashion, Willem Wiersema of the Netherlands, who had two bullets on Day 1, began the day with a 43rd but then followed with an eighth and eleventh to hold second overall with 21 net points. German Julian Hoffman also holds 21 points headed into Day 5.

In the women's division, Marilena Makri of Cyprus was the most consistent in the fleet toady, placing her in first overall. She finished with a fifth, fourth, and first to have 12 net points with just two days to go in the championship. Italian Giorgia Della Valle climbed into second overall after sailing three top-ten finishes. Ireland's U19 sailor Eve McMahon holds third overall, after a dropped (DNC) first race and a sixth and fifth to follow.

Three races are scheduled for Saturday, with the first warning signal at 14:00.
