A reminder that cyber threats are always a possibility in today's volatile international environment: News from the US Headquarters of BRP that the company's efforts to restore systems and business operations are continuing following a recent cyberattack. BRP manufacture personal watercraft and powerboats, including Australian brands.

BRP manufacturing sites in Valcourt (Canada), Rovaniemi (Finland), Sturtevant (USA) and Gunskirchen (Austria) are ramping up production activities and expect to be fully operational on August 16th. The rest of the production sites are planning to resume operations over the course of the week in a phased approach. BRP's team, with the assistance of external advisors, are working to restore all internal systems from its back-up repositories.

The company confirms that the malware infiltration came through a third-party service provider. BRP believes that the impact of the cyberattack was limited to its internal systems.

A reminder for all Marina operators: Oil Spill Response Course on 12th October. This course can ensure marinas and boatyards have those involved in the response adequately trained and prepared for their roles.

This course is structured as an hour self-study portion and 2 hours live online zoom session with the presenters, Clemens Overdijk CMM, Marina Manager Sydney Superyacht Marina and Martin Silk, Group Risk Manager for d'Albora Marinas.

The Boating Industry Association (BIA) has released its 'state of the industry' data report revealing national turnover at $9.55 billion for 2021-22. BIA Vice President Adam Smith launched the report on day one of the Sydney International Boat Show in Darling Harbour. "Our industry has seen growth in total revenue over the past year of 8.1 per cent to $9.55 billion, and in NSW revenue is up almost 10 per cent over that period. Across the last five years, that growth has been 15 per cent, with the challenges of Covid included," Smith said.

"There are now 26,000 people directly employed in the boating industry nationally with many thousands more in contractors supporting more than 2000 businesses. Seventy-five per cent are in small, family businesses, employing local workers and supporting local communities."

The second annual Australia Fiji Rendezvous sponsored by Benetti Yachts was held on August 12th at Port Denarau Marina, Fiji. Fourteen superyachts were in attendance, with all enjoying a busy season in Fiji and eager to receive updates on the Australian superyacht industry. Superyacht Australia members Rivergate Marina & Shipyard, Super Yacht Group Great Barrier Reef and Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard attended a full day's program of activities commencing with the Morning Tea Expo, followed by the Captains' VIP Lunch and culminating with the Crew Networking Party in the evening.

And staying in Asia, Nautor's Swan have launched their first motor yacht - the Swan Shadow - and have appointed an Asia dealer for the boat, ASIAMARINE, based in Aberdeen. Eric Noyel, Founder & CEO of ASIAMARINE, said, "we are absolutely delighted to be associated with Nautor's Swan and the new Swan Shadow. Swan is one of the most renowned of all the premier boating brands, owned by Leonardo Ferragamo, and known worldwide for performance, quality, elegance, and innovative design. Their move into the motor yacht sector of the market is truly a milestone moment, and ASIAMARINE is proud to be an integral part of this, in Asia."

Attributes like power, pace, muscle, and fishability are the reasons why Viking is the king of luxury sportsfishing yachts. They also form the backbone of sister brand, Valhalla, which is why they are the weapon of choice when it comes to premium, high performance centre console fish masters. Short Marine of Mosman and Runaway Bay are the Australian distributors for these best-of-breed vessels.

The alignment with the market-leading Viking also extends to the fact that both the Short and the Healey families are third generation boaters. Salt and passion are very much in the veins for each clan, as Pat Healey, CEO of Viking/Valhalla explains, "It's no surprise that Short Marine has already sold a Valhalla 37, and has previously sold a Viking Billfish 46 that has just arrived in Australia. They also have a sold Viking 54 Convertible and 48 Open that will be delivered next year."

Long-standing chairperson of Superyacht Australia, Barry Jenkins has retired after 15 dedicated years in the role. Jenkins has been involved in the marine industry for many years. His vast experience has seen him as General Manager of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Director of the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX), Vice President and President of the Boating Industry Association of Queensland/Marine Queensland; Director, Vice President and President of the Australian Marine Industries Federation; and the Founding Chairman of Super Yacht Base Australia now Superyacht Australia.
