J/99s continue to collect silverware in Australia

by J/Boats Australia 2 Aug 2022 22:42 BST

Following the stunning success of the J/99s in the 2021 Rolex Sydney to Hobart race, Australian J/99s continue to light up the race track, collecting lots of silverware for very happy owners.

Here are three reports from three J/99s spread across the Commonwealth...

Port Philip Bay

Ken & Dorothee's J/99 NANOOK is based at the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron (BYS), located on the stunning Morning Peninsula, Port Philip Bay, in Victoria. Here's their commentary:

"A few Adams skippers were a little concerned about a new J/99 joining the fleet in late 2021, and that concern proved to be justified as the J/99 NANOOK team impressed early and performed consistently in the major races.

NANOOK started by winning the Petersville Regatta, which consisted of an 8-race series contested by 23 boats. We headed up PHS and line honors top spots and 2nd ORCc.

In the famous Pinto Trophy, NANOOK went one further and took out the trifecta, winning line honors, ORCc and PHS!! Plus, NANOOK was overall BYS Club Champion, which is determined from the combined series over the season." Well done to Ken and Dorothee's team on NANOOK!

Newcastle

Jon and Emma's J/99 JOYRIDE has been sailing out of the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club in New South Wales, approximately 70 nm miles north of Sydney. They also had a fantastic first season and took home the following silverware:

  • 1st IRC and ORC in the Winter Short Ocean Point scores with three 1st places and three 2nd places
  • 1st IRC and ORC in the Summer Short Ocean Point scores. An 8-race series with 4x 1sts, 1x 2nd, and 3x 3rds.
  • 1st ORC in the Spring Ocean Pointscore and a string of 6 bullets to secure an unassailable win.

Hobart, Tasmania

Kevin's J/99 HILDR is sailing out of the Derwent Sailing Club down in Hobart, Tasmania. Yes, the same place where the famous ROLEX Sydney to Hobart Race finishes on the River Derwent.

A delighted Kevin, who is in his 80's, is just loving sailing the J/99. Kevin mainly sails with his son Glenn, who reported they won the combined Derwent Sailing Squadron and Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania post-Christmas Twilight series.

The J/99 HILDR also sailed the last two races of the Two-handed Autumn Series, taking line honours, a 3rd on handicap, and an outright win in the last race!
