Scrutton Cup to be raced at Fleetwood

The titans of model yacht racing will do battle for the 99 year old Scrutton Cup at Fleetwood from Sunday 31st July to Fri 5th Aug. Racing Vane A class model yachts, they will attempt to win this almost 100 year old trophy, as so many have before them.

This event was the 'World Championship' until the Radio Worlds started in 1975, and reached a zenith of competitors in 1973 at Fleetwood, with 56 boats taking part.

This year we have a modest entry of 17 boats and around 40 people involved, but the competition will be just as hard and with three World Champions and countless National Champions in the mix.

The trophies on display above are - from left to right - Jonnies Cup (most Beats to windward), Wing & Wing Cup (most downwind runs), Yachting Monthly Cup (Wed knock out event), Scrutton Cup (Overall winner), Dennis Lippett Cup (top junior).

With full days of racing on Sunday, Monday, Thursday & Friday, and the knockout competition on Wednesday, there's plenty to see.

Choppy conditions cause a boat to take in water, with electrical problems The first East Kent Radio Sailing Club Summer series event was held in sunny and breezy conditions. 15 races were run in uncomfortable wind conditions at Abbey Meads 15 races were run in uncomfortable wind conditions changing from southerly to westerly, initially causing strong swirling gusts and lulls and really heavy rain before settling down to even stronger gusts up to the 25 mile an hour forecast. With the wind forever increasing in strength a couple of 'D' rigs were brought out The showers had just about died out on arrival, to leave us with a nice Blowy Westerly.
