The RS Games 2022 - Day 1

by Lynn Billowes 22 Jul 2022 15:26 BST 21 July - 5 August 2022

1,044 sailors from 22 countries will compete over the next 16 days in a true festival of sailing at the RS Games 2022.

The RS Games is the third edition of the quadrennial event hosted by RS Sailing. Thirteen of RS Sailing's performance classes will be battling it out on the race course to see who will be crowned champion, but in true RS style the excitement doesn't stop when the sailors get back on shore, with an impressive itinerary of live music, DJ sets, and prize givings to keep the sailors entertained.

The RS Games is a true celebration of the RS community and lifestyle that is so special to many sailors worldwide. The RS Games kicks off with the RS Feva World Championship and RS21 National Championship, followed by the RS Aero Youth World Championship. The event ramps up with the National/European Championships for the; RS100, RS300, RS600, RS700, RS800 and RS Vareo classes. Following quickly behind are the Celebration Regattas for the RS200 and RS400 classes. The RS Tera World Championship, the RS Aero European Championship and the RS500 World Championship will conclude the event.

Spanning from the 21 of July through to the 5 of August, the 16 days ahead are in safe hands with event hosts Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy being no stranger to large events. Renowned for excellent race management, world-class facilities, fantastic volunteers and a super friendly team, RS sailors can expect to be well looked after.

Jon Partridge, RS Sailing CEO – Commercial commented, “We're incredibly excited for the RS Games 2022, after a challenging few years, it's such a privilege to be able to welcome everyone to Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. It's truly inspiring to meet so many people that are passionate about our sport, we can't wait to watch the racing unfold and enjoy time with friends and family on shore".

Events like these do not happen without incredible partners. RS Sailing would like to express huge thanks to; Rooster, Selden, Harken, Lifejacket, RS Sailing Store, Marksetbot, WPNSA, Digital Sailing, Kingfisher Yacht Ropes, Fernhurst Books, Noble Marine, Allen, Hyde Sails, Spinlock and 18 Words for their support.

RS21 Race Report

Day one of racing brought light winds, which meant racing was incredibly tight for the RS21 Class. In race one, Oscar Cordon led the fleet until halfway down the final run when Hugh Watson and Alison Morrish overtook him to take first and second.

In the second race, Hugh Watson started strong and extended his lead the whole way around the course. Wrapping up the day, Hugh Watson and his crew were strong out the blocks with two firsts, Alison Morrish and her crew were consistent with two second places, Oscar Cordon and his crew just pipped Paul Fisk to take third place. The RS21 Class enjoyed a BYO BBQ and exchanged ideas on how to go faster the following day in the evening.

Keep up with all the action by following @RS Sailing, and check out the video of day one below.
