NS5, the last of the series, attracted over a 100 Topper sailors to Rutland Sailing Club. The forecast was for a strong breeze on both days. Sunshine greeted the sailors and the offshore wind was gusting through the boat park as boats were rigged.

Russ from Topper sailboats was on site early and busy helping sailors with last minute repairs. Class chair Martin Cooper lead the briefing thanking GJW Direct and all the class sponsors before handing over to the race officers.

Without delay the fleets were launched and 90, 5.3 and 20, 4.2 sailors headed off downwind towards the dam wall ready for a planned 3 races.

The fleet was flighted, and both starts were away cleanly. In 17 to 20 knots Ed Smith of Chipstead and Chris Hampshire of Ripon SC took the race wins with Lewis Bacon of Leigh & Lowton SC and Joe Rowe of Draycote Academy in 2nd.

Race 2 and Race 3 followed a similar pattern with the wind staying constant, and this provided a different winner for each race in each flight.

The sailor with the most consistent results and leading overnight in the 5.3 fleet was Lewis Bacon.

The 4.2 fleet were sailing closer to the club, but still battling a strong breeze. Harry Mitchell of Erith SC was sailing well and with two race wins was to lead overnight.

Day 2 saw more wind forecast. With a steady 20 plus knots from the same direction, sailors were asked to consider reefing and approximately 80% decided this was a good idea.

Both fleets launched on time, Leo Yates of Island Barn SC was to dominate day 2 with a 1,2,1 and Jess Powell of Draycote Academy put in a solid 2,3,2 to move up the ladder. It was very tight racing with 2nd to 6th separated by 2 points.

The 4.2 fleet went left out of the club house to the corner of the lake and enjoyed a second day of four races. Harry Sims of Llandegfedd Sailing Club sailed well to take the event win by one point from the overnight leader.

Congratulations to Leo Yates and Harry Sims, thanks to all the volunteers, Rutland Sailing Club and class sponsors GJW Direct, Rooster, Harken and Optimum Time.

The next UK stop is the Topper Nationals at WPNSA, entry is still open so we look forward to seeing you all there.
