Seawanhaka Cup 48th edition ready to sail

by Long Beach Yacht Club 31 May 2022 16:56 BST 31 May - 5 June 2022

The excitement is coming to a head as the latest edition of the Seawanhaka International Challenge Cup for Small Yachts is ready to start. Teams from nine international yacht clubs are assembled in Long Beach to begin racing.

Tuesday May 31st is practice day and then racing starts on June 1st in the waters off the Belmont Memorial Pier.

On the eve of the event, Commodore Jon Turigliatto of Long Beach Yacht Club had this to say: "We are very honored to host the Seawanhaka International Challenge Cup. On behalf of the Flag Officers and members of the Long Beach Yacht Club, we extend a warm welcome to the competing teams and guests from among the world's leading yacht clubs. We look forward to spirited competition on the water and the lively social activities that Regatta Chairman Cheri Busch has planned for the week. It is our great privilege to sail in defense of the Cup and to be a part of the great legacy of Corinthian competition it represents."

From Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club Commodore Jean-Piere Blaise: "This year's field of competitors span the globe from Norway to New Zealand, from Australia to Great Britain who have sent Minima YC the original challenger of record from 1895. With Long Beach Yacht Club's extensive experience in hosting match racing regattas this year's event is shaping up to be one for the ages."

When asked about this year's Seawanhaka Cup, SCYC skipper Chris Poole said, "Long Beach is an amazing venue for sailing and (hosts) the grandfather of modern match racing with the prestigious Congressional Cup. It's going to be great to see the Seawanhaka Cup hosted by LBYC and sailed using the famous Catalina 37's. It will add a new and incredible chapter to the amazing history of this event. When I first won the Cup in 2014 I wanted to see the defense sailed in large keel boats like the Swedish Match 40's we have in Oyster Bay, and seeing it being sailed in the Catalina 37's will be amazing."
