One hundred and nine Finns from 19 nations have gathered at Fraglia Vela Malcesine on Lake Garda, Italy for the 2022 Finn Gold Cup. Ten races are scheduled over the next five days to determine the 2022 Finn World Champion.
Over the last two days registration and equipment inspection have been completed, and on Monday evening the opening ceremony took place in the club grounds overlooking Garda.
In the morning at the class AGM, Rob McMillan, from Australia, was elected at the 12th President of the International Finn Association, following the retirement of Balazs Hajdu, from Hungary, who had served for 17 years.
At the opening ceremony on Monday evening he perfectly encapsulated the mood of the gathering, "It's special moment for us all to be here to compete for what is undoubtedly the greatest trophy in single handed sailing in the world - The Finn Gold Cup."
Also at the AGM, many event and format changes were decided but the main interest was in the Executive Committee elections with Kristian Sjøberg, from Finland and Andrzej Romanowski, from Poland, elected as Vice Presidents, while Tim Tavinor, from Britain, was elected as Chairman of the Technical Committee.
The opening ceremony included flag ceremony with local children as flag bearers and an enjoyable snack buffet before the skies opened with a passing storm.
McMillan closed by saying, "It's great to see us all together and WE are the future of the Finn class, and I have to say it's looking pretty good."
Racing is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 13.00.
