The Hungarians of Seven Five Nine (today 4-11) are the winners of the second event of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2022, an event organized by the Società Triestina Sport del Mare attended by about twenty crews, who have arrived from eight countries to underline the great diffusion of this timeless monotype.

In command from the very beginning, Akos Csolto's crew of Balazs Tamai, Botond Weores and Mihaly Kasa struggled more than expected to confirm themselves at the level of the first day, but fought with teeth to defend the advantage that, race after race, gradually went away. Today, in a gusty and unstable breeze, Seven Five Nine, who for the record won among the Corinthians and for the first time stood to the top of the overall podium, fought back the return of Italian Gilles (3-1) who, starting in muted, climbed position after position, closed just one point behind the leader.

"Only on the eve of this stage we did not imagine we could fight for the overall success, but at the end of the first day we realized we had the speed and concentration to be really competitive - commented Balasz Tomai of Seven Five Nine - "Saturday and Sunday, thanks to the use of another regatta course, the situation was more confused and we understood that it was important to keep in touch with the bulk of the fleet, instead of taking risks from a tactical point of view: it was a choice that paid and that gave us the satisfaction of getting on the top step of the podium for the first time ever."

Interview with Balasz Tomai

Marcello Caldonazzo Arvedi's Gilles with former Olympians Pietro D'Alì and Andrea Trani onboard anticipated the Germans of White Room (16-7) by just one point, who ran into the worst day of their participation today, to the point of having to discard both today's results: a drop in the performance that did not totally compromise the participation of Michael Tarabochia's team, who finished third, being also the second best Corinthian team.

At the foot of the podium the ride stopped for the outgoing champions of Melgina (7-2), led by Paolo Brescia and Simon Sivitz Kosuta to nine points from the third classified, while the top five was completed by Gill Race Team (1-12) of Miles Quinton with Geoff Carveth at the helm, who had the satisfaction of getting on the third step of the Corinthian podium.

Arkanoé by Montura (2-19), Working Girl (14-3), AleAli Eurocart (6-6) and Skorpios (8-13) also entered the top ten.

On the side lines of the award ceremony, the event main organizer Simone Viduli extended to the participants the greetings on behalf of the President of the Società Triestina Sport del Mare, Guido Benci: "Hosting the Melges 24 class has become a pleasant habit for us and, once again this year, we were able to stage a complete and competitive event: I thank the Race Committee, chaired by Dario Motz, for the perfect management of the regattas, the President of the Protest Committee Fabio Bassan, the measurer Eros Angeli and Zerogradinod for managing the communication. Finally, a big thanks to all our collaborators and volunteers who have made this regatta possible."

International Melges 24 Class Association would like to thank everyone involved for their work to deliver another great regatta of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series - Società Triestina Sport del Mare and Melges 24 fleet of Trieste have been great hosts and collaborative partners to deliver this international regatta for the third time!

The Melges 24 European Sailing Series are now leaving Trieste to head to Austria where, between 27 and 29 May, the races valid for Act number three of the 2022 season, hosted by the Segelclub Kammersee, are scheduled on Attersee.
