Four Argentine teams in the top five
The Argentinean team of Matías Gainza Eurnekian & Federico Villambrosa, still holds the lead at the 2007 29er World Championship with 11 points. Today they competed face to face in the same course with their nearest rivals: Pepe Bettini and Matias Keller, who have 16 points. Adela Deschamps and Juan de la Fuente with 33 points are seventh now and although they are still the lead team on the mix category, they left the third position they held yesterday to the newcomers on the top five: Francisco Piccini & Santiago Daneri with 30 points. Fourth are, father and son, German & Martín Billoch with 31 points and fifth sharing the same score, the 2006 European champions, Huw Humphrey & Max Todd.
The second day brought a blessing to all sailors: wind. After two days of light winds, competitors were able to display all their talent in the waters of the River Plate. Teams sailed today, and will continue through Tuesday 23rd of January, divided on 2 courses and into 4 fleets until they are again divided in Gold and Silver Fleets from Thursday onwards.
Once the regattas finished, Federico Villambrosa outlined the reasons why he thought his team achieved to hold the lead: “We have been constant in all our races and this has clearly favoured us. We have a very good feeling with Matias while we compete and get along very well while we sail. Today was particularly important for us because it was the first time we competed against Bettini & Keller, something we had been trying not to do prior to this World Championship. We managed to arrive in better positions and finally kept the lead. I think that the main reason why we are still on the top is because we have been constant”.
The wind had a speed of 5 knots from East at the beginning of the first race. It increased up to 10 knots towards the last regatta with a East-South East direction. The river was low today and kept calm with small waves.
