Chivas Winter Series at Helensburgh Sailing Club Races 1 & 2

The generous sponsorship of Helensburgh Sailing Club's Winter Series from Chivas Brother's in the from of some of their excellent 'warming' malt was appropriate as Helensburgh Sailing Club’s winter series kicked off with two races in light winds with the air temperature hovering just above freezing.

Race Officer, Tim Flatman sent the fleet off in a light north westerly breeze over a course which made the most of the race area of HSC however what breeze there was didn’t stay for long. Bill Souden in his Blaze made the most of some big shifts and went on to win comfortably from the 505 of Alistair and Charles Milton. Ali Davies and Tobi Wilson were third in their laser 4000 with Merv Wright also in a Blaze in fourth.

The second race set over a smaller course and much tighter line gave the systematic boats a bit more to do but not enough room to pull out any significant leads over the other boats. Quickest of the bowsprit boats was Colin Greer and Craig Hepplewhite who had a big lead in their 49’er, lapping some of the other boats, but they could only manage a third on corrected time, Bill Souden landed a second and Barrie McLean in his Solo from Loch Ard took a well deserved victory.

The next races are on Sunday 4th, hopefully with more wind, less ice and more of Merv's excellent soup.
