GBR 420s at the Palamos Christmas Race in Spain - Day 2

by John Meadowcroft 21 Dec 2021 06:58 GMT 19-22 December 2021

Day 2 of the Palamos Christmas Regatta was a tantalising affair for all concerned as sailors launched late after a postponement and then saw the wind come and go as breeze developed and then faded.

Eventually the race team decided to go for it and both the blue and yellow fleets got away at the first time of asking. 45 minutes later and the wind started to disappear. British boats were both well placed and buried in the fleet, so there were mixed emotions when the races were abandoned. However more valuable experience was gained so it was not a day wasted.

After racing it transpired that the race committee had managed to finish some boats prior to the abandoning of the yellow fleet. Redress was given to those given a finishing place before the race was abandoned prior to the expiry of the time limit. Unsurprisingly this gave rise to further mixed emotions with a significant proportion of the fleet required to take a score in a race that with hindsight cannot have turned out in the way that the race team had planned.

Tuesday is day 3 and the GBR 420s will be back stronger and with an improved forecast racing is scheduled to start a little earlier.
