2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Championship - Day 3

by ISCYRA 11 Dec 2021 22:31 GMT 9-12 December 2021

Day Three of the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is in the books with another two fair races on the Rio de Plata for the 25 teams attending the event.

The first race of the day, and fifth overall, was postponed for an hour and started at 14:00 with an easterly breeze of about 8 knots. A good shift from the right in the first downwind leg pushed the Longarela brothers and Memo Calegari with Sancho Castro in first and second place. Those positions were maintained throughout the race but in the end Hector and Hugo Longarela were overtook and the great Memo Calegari won the race, Poro Monez Ruiz with his nephew Lucas Monez Ruiz finished seconds and in third place it was Fernando Queirel and Julian Gazari junior.

The second race of the day started with 10/12 knots from 95/100 degrees. The fleet was split on the racecourse, half went right, and half chose the left, meeting back at the first topmark. The downwind was very disputed with many changes in positions. At last Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro and the Altolaguirre brothers emerged as leaders in the last downwind, winning the fifth race out of six. Peisajovich/Ciro misjudged the lay line and were passes by the Altolaguirre duo. In third place came Daniel Della Torre with his crew Julian Gazzari.

Six of the eight races scheduled have been sailed at Club Nautico Olivos. The plan is to fulfill the schedule with two more races tomorrow.

The party is on tonight ashore, with a camaraderie dinner for all the teams, having a tribute to the former Star Sailors in Argentina.
