Youth Foiling Gold Cup Act 3 at Cagliari - Day 4

by 69F Sailing 24 Oct 2021 21:46 BST 21-31 October 2021

Only two races were completed today, the fourth day of racing in the Youth Foiling Gold Cup. Both the teams and the race committee had a particularly challenging day, with the expected weather conditions failing to materialise as thunderstorms north of the Gulf of Cagliari prevented the north-east wind from reaching the regatta course.

The two races were held with a breeze that was light and highly variable, in terms of both intensity and direction. The first race, which concluded the flight that got under way yesterday, was won by Young Azzurra, while the second race, which started after a long wait for wind, was won by Team France. The French team, however, received a 4-point penalty due to being OCS on the starting line. The race committee attempted to start a third race, but this was abandoned due to the breeze dropping out on the course.

The overall ranking after 18 races remains unchanged.

The competition will continue tomorrow with the last day of qualifying races. The top team in the overall classification will go directly to the final, while the remaining teams will meet in knockouts.

Paula Barcelo - EQUAL Sailing:

"Today it was pretty difficult. The wind was gusty and shifty. Actually, it was the first rainy day. Is been very challenging for the race committee to set a course, but they did a very good job.

With these marginal conditions, when the line between foiling and not foiling is very thin, it's not easy handling the boat and at the same time keep on eye on the racecourse. But we are quite happy and we are pretty sure that the learning curve is going to raise."

Arnaud Grange - Okalys Youth Project / SNG:

"Today was a difficult day because the conditions were very unstable. But we sailed just in one race in which we had a bad start. We were late on the starting line and during the race, we tried to recover a bit. It's been a frustrating day for us, we didn't race as we wanted. But we are happy about the overall results. We replaced two crew members at the beginning of the event. Normally we sail with three people, but now we are four. So the configuration onboard has changed a bit, as well as the communication. But we are getting better every day."
