The San Diego Yacht Club's One Design Weekend this past Saturday and Sunday was filled with great competition for the Etchells fleet and for most was doubling as practice for the upcoming Etchells North American Championship this Friday, October 1 to Sunday, October 3.

At the top of the fleet was Argyle Campbell on Rock On. "The team sailed with great attitudes in the light and shifty conditions and never gave up," Campbell said. Coach Mark Ivey was also there to direct the team. Campbell will be sailing in the North Americans with crew Alex Curtiss, Chuck Eaton and Jesse Kirkland.

In second place was Jim Cunningham on Lifted, who was only three points behind Campbell with a total of 23 points. In third place, and only one point behind Cunningham was Bruce Nelson on Rhino. And behind them, the 4th through 7th places were separated by only six points highlighting the depth of competitiveness to come at the North Americans.

Along with the teams sailing with pros, there was also a strong group of Corinthian sailors (no pro/Cat 3 sailors) including the newest fleet member, Kristin McManus, co-owner of Chomp!

"This has been a life-long dream for me to race Etchells competitively and the San Diego fleet knows how to deliver! Both on the water and back on land," said McManus. McManus will also be sailing in the North Americans.

After a full weekend you can feel the excitement brewing for Etchells North American Championship. The Fleet will sail for three days from Friday, October 1 to Sunday, October 3 on the Pacific Ocean course about 2.5 miles off the Zuniga Jetty. Weigh-ins start Wednesday, September 29 and sailors can participate in a practice race set for 1400 on Thursday.

Following the practice race on Thursday, competitors can enjoy a welcome reception at SDYC. On Saturday, sailors and guests can head to the SDYC Pavilion and say hello to long-time fleet member Kjeld Hestehave, who will be on the grill serving up to be a BBQ Saturday night.
