RS Aero Italian National Championship at Tognazzi Marine Village, Rome, Italy

by Tognazzi Marine Village 15 Sep 2021 09:48 BST 10-12 September 2021

Maria Vittoria Arseni and Filippo Vincis are the new Italian Champions of the RS Aero class, respectively in the RS Aero 5 and RS Aero 7 categories in the conclusion of the three day Championship at the Tognazzi Marine Village, off the coast of Rome. Forty RS Aeros competed, including athletes from Great Britain, France, Ireland and Russia, who had the opportunity to spend three splendid days of sun and medium-light wind, enough to complete the program of ten races plus the pre-event training day from visiting International Class Manager, Peter Barton from the UK.

In the RS Aero 5, Maria Vittoria Arseni (Tognazzi Marine Village) was at the top of the overall standings from the very beginning, switching to the RS Aero 5 for the first time. In fact, her sporting career was born in the Ilca4 class where she recently won the European youth title. The light wind of the day did not allow Maria Vittoria to extend the distance, but with a sixth and a second of the day she still managed to keep her distance from Francesca Ramazzotti (ASD Veliamoci, Sardinia) who finished in second overall. Completing the podium of the Italian Championship is Manuel De Felice (Circolo Nautico Monte di Procida) who with a first and a fourth place today brings home the bronze medal, even though he is fourth overall (the Russian Alisa Ivanovskaya closes in third position, but does not compete with the Italian title).

The last two races cost the British sailor Peter Barton dearly, until yesterday at the top of the standings, who had to give way to the Italian Filippo Vincis (LNI del Sulcis, Sardinia), also first of the under 21s. The Sardinian athlete already he had begun his climb to the top of the ranking yesterday and the two first placings of today brought him firmly to the first position and allowed him to win the Italian title in front of the host Francesco Miseri (Tognazzi Marine Village) who had to settle for the silver medal. Third step of the Italian podium went to Leopoldo Sirolli (Tognazzi Marine Village), however satisfied with the result achieved.

"It is an important result for me" - says Maria Vittoria Arseni, in her first experience on the RS Aero, "I wanted to try the RS Aero and enjoyed it. I didn't find big differences in handling compared to the ILCA and maybe that's what led me to win with serenity, it was a formative experience".

Satisfied with how the event went is the president of the Tognazzi Marine Village and the Italian RS Aero class, Guido Sirolli: "As a Class we started a sporting journey with the Italian Sailing Federation only last October. In less than a year we find ourselves in the Italian Championship with forty boats. This is a great success for us. Seeing so many young people who, after the experience on the Open Skiff, have decided to continue sporting activity on the RS Aero is the confirmation that it is a fun boat and that it will certainly grow further in the coming years. The club managed to organise a perfect event, the marine weather conditions did the rest, allowing them to bring home ten good races that highlighted the best athletes in the fleet".

Next for the Italian RS Aeros is the event at Rimini on 1-3rd October on the Adriatic coast. Charter RS Aeros are available!
