Typhoon Scorpion Nationals 2021 in association with Craftinsure and FFX - Day 5

by Ian Cadwallader 20 Aug 11:20 BST 15-20 August 2021

Race 9: Course - T3L Triangle /Sausage / Triangle: Leeward Finish

The fleet enjoyed a chance to draw breath as Race Officer, Malcolm Woolcock used his experience to keep the fleet ashore to wait for the Cornish mizzle to clear and the South Westerly breeze to fill in.

Pathfinders Angus and Fraser Hemmings used this time to hone their port close hauled skills. But when the race started, the plethora of early starters voted with their feet and were richly rewarded. Tom & Rachael led round the windward mark followed by Alan & Simon and Ryan & Hannah who charged down the first reach, rolling Alan & Simon.

Today's navigation challenge was to spot the shorten course at the third windward mark.

Final places were Tom Gillard & Rachael Grey winning, followed by Alan Krailing & Si Forbes, then Ryan & Hannah Buchanan.

Race 10: Course - T3W Triangle /Sausage / Triangle: Windward Finish

Nigel Wakefield & Pasty showed all their pathfinding experience and opened the gate, tacked and led the fleet round followed closely by class heavyweights Dave Elston & Gavin Poullion and the Weymouth all-female team of Sandra Smith & Jeni Richards (from the awesome Beat Racing App).

Tom & Rachael showed their class on the tight second reach and pushed into second. But they showed they are fallible by mucking up their next spinnaker hoist.

Nigel & Pasty finally succumbed to the chasing pack and ended up third - a great result for old boat.

Final results were Tom Gillard & Rachael Grey first, then Alan Krailing & Si Forbes, and Nigel Wakefield & Pasty.

Sponsors

The National Scorpion Association would like to say a massive thank you to the event sponsors, who have been so good to the Scorpion class, especially during these times.

Typhoon - Typhoon International have been innovators in providing personal protection from the elements since 1947. We have a reputation for the manufacture of exceptionally high-quality marine products, including drysuits, wetsuits, diving suits, buoyancy aids and more.

Craftinsure - Craftinsure is owned by Boat owners who are set up the business nearly 20 years ago and Craftinsure now insures over 20,000 boats. We only insure Boats. Craftinsure is a 'Quote and Buy' online business, we pass on the cost savings of being online to you as very competitive premiums. "We are direct to customers only - we do not deal with brokers or marinas, so you get the savings."

FFX - Are one of the largest independent suppliers of power tools and power tool accessories, hand tools, fixings and fasteners, and general construction consumables. FFX's head office, on-line operation and distribution centre is in Lympne, Kent with branches in Ashford and Folkestone.

The class encourages Scorpion sailors to support our sponsors wherever possible, since they are so good at supporting us.
