"We are learning a lot, making big steps every day. Now we're able to do nice manoeuvres and bring the fight to the other teams" - Emile Amoros, Team France
The first day of the qualification series was a long and hot affair, marked by long periods without any wind that were followed by strong puffs that challenged the new teams. After a long break to wait for the new wind, Lake Garda's famous southerly Ora wind finally got up from the lunch table and kicked into gear after drinking its espresso. It should have asked for a double shot as it never really found its form.
Teams who had raced Act 1 of the YFGC earlier in the year, lead the way, with Team DutchSail- Janssen de Jong taking control, followed by an on-form Young Azzurra who were in turn put under pressure by the Okalys Youth Project. Of the new teams, Team France impressed with an early mastery of the 69F, scoring three second-place finishes in a row to take second on the day.
