Second-last day of racing in Campione del Garda for the iQFOiL Junior and Youth World Championships, event of the new Olympic sailing class organized by Univela Sailing and Canottieri Garda Salò.
Tomorrow is the last day of racing and the one who's going to proclaim the new Youth World champion for those who are Under19 and the next Junior World Champion for those who are under 17.
The Frenchmen Gaspar Carfatan (Under19) and Eliot Ponce-Beranski (Under 17), with great results in all races, keep their spot on top of the provisional ranking and conquer the direct men's final in their respective categories.
In the women's fleet the ones gaining direct access to the final are the French Manon Pianazza (Under19) and the Israeli Tamar Steinberg, who keeps leading the Under17 with only bullets in the whole championship.
Tomorrow's going to be the final day, the format is the Medal Race one: Spectacular format for both race speed and power to overturn the final ranking, giving all athletes who accessed the race the possibility to chase the title.
Medal Race
Four Medal Races are scheduled for tomorrow, one for each category: Under 19 Men- Women and Under 17 Boys-Girls. Medal race can be accessed only by the first 12 ranked from the Opening Series. There will be no point scoring in the Medal Series.
It starts with the Quarter Final race where the eight athletes from fifth to twelfth place compete. The first four ranked boards in the Quarter Final race and the third and fourth overall ranked board from the Opening Series shall advance to the Semi Final. The last 4 boards in the Quarter Final race shall be scored in positions 9th to 12th in the Event. The first two ranked boards in the Semi Final race and the first and second overall ranked board from the Opening Series shall advance to the Grand Final. The last 4 boards in the Semi Final race shall be scored in positions 5th to 8th in the Event. The winner of the Grand Final race is the winner of the Event. The second ranked board shall be scored 2nd place, the third ranked shall be scored 3rd place.
The Race
On Friday, the racing day started early with Peler, the local wind coming from the north. In the morning all the categories have done Upwind races with a wind between 12 to 14 knots. Instead in the afternoon the wind was a little bit lighter around 8 knots and All the fleets raced on the Slalom format.
