RS Aero Open at Warsash Sailing Club

by RS Aero Class Association 25 Jul 2021 06:11 BST 17-18 July 2021

35 RS Aeros came to Warsash for a lovely sunny weekend with the forecast showed plenty of challenges in the central Solent with the mid summer heat creating thermals to overcome the light gradient wind.

The race team did well to achieve three light races on Saturday with the key being for competitors to spot the breeze on the water and try to stay in it as well as possible. Consistency was hard in the larger RS Aero 7 fleet however Greg Bartlett (Starcross YC) sailed well to secure a comfortable margin over Spike Daniels (Hayling Island SC) in 2nd and Tim Norris (Warsash SC) in 3rd. Fittingly, the winner of the final race of the day was event sponsor, Steve Norbury (Warsash SC) of Selden Mast.

In the RS Aero 9s Peter Barton (Lymington Town SC) came through with wins, perhaps helped by a little more lefting upwind than others. Richard Watsham (Starcross YC / RNSA) was consistent for 2nd and David Rickard (Gurnard SC) took 3rd overall.

With no sign of any wind to make racing possible on Sunday the PRO, Peter Knight, made a good early call and Saturday's results stood as the overalls for the weekend.

Many thanks to Warsash Sailing Club for being excellent hosts again and to Selden Mast for their generous support.

Next up for the UK RS Aeros is the RS Aero European Championship at Lake Garda, Italy from 1-6th August with 70 entries and a small UK team set to compete, whilst mid August sees the UK Nationals at Hayling Island with a record 116 entries so far!
