After two postponements due to Covid restrictions, the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association is pleased to announce that the Club's '8th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta' will now take place on Sunday, 8 August at Lackford Lake, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
The event was initiated eight years ago as a fun event to celebrate and coincide with Antigua Sailing Week in the Caribbean. Amazingly, through a Google news alert, the SESCA regatta came to the attention of the Sailing Week Race Committee and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, who were so impressed with the initiative that they kindly came onboard as event sponsors. With the Tourism Authority's generous support, the regatta has become the yearly highlight of SESCA's racing and social calendar.
This year, the regatta is being combined with the club's 40th anniversary celebrations, so every effort is being made to make the event bigger and better than ever. It is hoped that the current fleet record of 38 boats will be exceeded. There will be three races for adult and junior divisions in the morning and a variety of fun events organised during the afternoon.
The Tourism Authority will once again be providing a steel pan band for lunch time entertainment and prizes of a Caribbean nature.
The adult fleet is expected to comprise of: Lasers; Laser Radials; Aero 7s; Wanderers; Enterprises; Comet Duos; Vibes; Toppers; Gulls and Hansa 303s, while the junior fleet is likely to be made up of: RS Quests; RS Zests; Picos; Toppers and Optimists.
The club has been running a series of race training sessions for the less experienced members to help prepare them for the regatta.
Antigua Sailing Week, which was sadly cancelled again this year due to the pandemic, is scheduled to take place from 30 April - 6 May 2022.
