Royal Southampton Yacht Club Winter Series - Race 3

by Andrew Campbell 29 Oct 2006 21:16 GMT 29 October 2006

Victory for Njos, Glass Onion, Contraction and Triptych

The third race of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Winter series was held on Sunday 29th October with blue skies and sunshine. The wind was ‘Light and Variable’ shifting just before the start requiring the committee boat to up anchor from Netley and reset the start on the Hythe shore. The 8 knot north easterly wind at the start got the race underway. As the morning progressed the wind got lighter and more variable. The committee shortened classes 2 and 3 from 2 laps to one allowing them all to finish at sensible times. The full length courses and dying winds for the multihulls and class 1 meant that a number of boats retired or were frustrated by not making the finish line by the cut off time.

Class 1 IRC saw Tim Octon’s Corby 35 ‘Njos’ take line honours and victory on corrected time from Paul King’s Prima 38 ‘Serendip’ second and ‘Big Bamboo’ Nick Margree’s Beneteau 40.7 third.

Class 2 IRC had Steve Sault’s J/80 ‘Hoolinkazan’ take line honours but victory on handicap went to Jacob Mackenzie’s Evolution 22 ‘Glass Onion’ with ‘Fat Hen’ Laurence Shell’s Hunter Sonata OD second and ‘Hoolinkazan’ third.

Class 3 Club class, saw Fergus Roper’s ‘Contraction’ a Hunter Formula 1 take line honours and the class win with Ian Morse’s Jeanneau Sunfast 26 Equus taking second from ‘Grace’ Graham Sparkes’ Freedom 27 who finished third.

In the Multihull Class, the Russian’s carbon catamaran was shown how it is done by Phil Cotton on his Seacart 30 ‘Buzz’ taking line honours by 17 minutes but giving way to Mike Wigmores Farrier F28R ‘Triptych’ who took the class win by nine minutes from Ben Goodland on his Raider 30 ‘Team Eberspacher’ second with ‘Buzz’ third.

The RSYC Winter series continues on Sunday mornings until December 3rd. For details contact Cathy Crawley, Sailing Secretary, RSYC, Tel: 023 8022 3352 or email racing@rsyc.org.uk
