Rooster North Topper Series concludes at Budworth Sailing Club

by Ali Wood 8 Jul 2021 17:53 BST 3 July 2021

The last event of the 2020-21 Rooster North Topper Series took place at Budworth Sailing Club on Sat 3rd July.

In what has been a challenging season, the North team of parents and volunteers managed to put on five out of the six planned events. Thanks must go to the all the clubs who have hosted this year, some at very short notice, to allow the young sailors to get out on the water and compete in this growing series.

The North series consists of events across the North of England to make up the main series, with the winners of the NE and NW venues also claiming the corresponding traveller trophies. This year sailors travelled from all corners of the North as well as some visitors from the Midlands.

The sailing has been competitive all season with events being won by Daisy Fisher (Hollingworth Lake), Tom Moss (Scaling Dam) and Chloe Mills (Pennine), while other podium positions went to Henry Smith (West Riding), Erin Young (Scaling Dam) and Hayden Moore (Notts County).

It's also been great to see so many new sailors joining the series this year.

Each event has a prize for best newcomer, many of which have gone to sailors from Budworth including Rosanna Joyce, James Alexander and Fin Waterhouse as well as Will Howard (Scaling Dam) and Reuben Lawrence (Errwood).

In the end, some of the places and trophies went down to the last race of the last event of the series. Chloe went into the final event carrying a 19th from the first event, due to injury on the water, but she had won at Rossendale to be leading the NW events, Daisy had been consistent all season having placed in the top two at all the previous events.

Chloe was leading the Budworth event after three races, but as the wind dropped for the last race, it was Daisy who took the lead needing a first place to win the event and the NW series. The only sailor that was near to challenging for the win was Ava Harris-Scott (Elton) in her first 5.3 event. She pushed Daisy for 3 laps but experience won in the end and Daisy finished with a bullet in the last race.

Daisy has sailed an excellent season and took home an armful of trophies: 1st North Travellers, 1st NW Travellers, 1st NE Travellers. She is also the NE Area Champion.

Chloe and Tom however, in second and third didn't make it easy and have been chasing her all season both wining events over the year.

Chloe had some excellent events to finish second in the North and second NW Travellers. Tom finished third in the North, second NE and third NW.

It's also been great to see some of the younger sailors, both in the 4.2 fleet and those recently moved up to 5.3. Other Trophies went to 1st Under 14 Harriet Wood (Elton), and 4.2 Trophies: 1st Boy, Theo McGonigle (Ripon) and 1st Girl, Ava Harris-Scott (Elton).

The series finished with all sailors who had competed at enough events to qualify being entered into a draw for a new Topper sail, this was won by Kiera from Scaling Dam!

If you have sailors who want to join us next season, the next event is on Sat 18th Sept at Bolton Sailing Club.
