Update on Gustavia Yacht Club first International Photography Contest

The Contest was launched during spring 2020 despite the pandemic. Due to the cancellation of the Monaco Yacht Show the prizes remittance had to be postponed for a year, and will take place in Monaco during this year Yacht Show.

At the same time the ten best voted photographs will be exhibited and finally auctioned, to the benefit of the SNSM of St Barthélemy.

56 photographers from 18 countries participated.

Information on GYC second year International Photography Contest

Following the success of the 1st year's Contest, it has been decided to launch the 2nd year International Contest for professional photographers, and to keep the same theme: "capture the beauty of sailing".

Photographers have up to the end of July to register (free of charge) by contacting Jean-Pierre Hennequet, the Jury Secretary:

The name of the three winners will be revealed in Monaco during the coming Yacht Show, and their photographs will be exhibited in Gustavia during the Bucket regatta in march 2022.

Our Jury

The jury is composed of 13 members, six of whom are from the GYC. Sir Stelios Haji Ioannou, Commodore of the GYC, is the President of Honour of the Jury. He will not take part in the votes.

The jury is chaired by Mrs Milena Perini, who is a member of the family who has long been managing the famous Italian shipyard whose name it bears. She is a frequent visitor to St Barthélemy and is a Director of the GYC.

The other members of the jury who are also members of the GYC are:

  • Madame Minou Weber, from Luxemburg, ex owner of the S/Y Minimo, frequent sailor of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean seas, and founding member of the GYC. She regularly stays in St Barthélemy with her family in their house in Grand Cul de Sac.

  • Mr. Bruno Gardien, is the owner of the sailboat S/Y Liamuiga. Based in St Kitts, he is a founding member of the GYC and regularly stays in St Barthélemy. He has also been a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco since 2001.

  • Mrs. Candy Miller, from Nantucket (USA) is a member of the GYC and the Great Harbor Nantucket Yacht Club of Nantucket. She has been a regular visitor to St Barthélemy (for 39 years) and Porquerolles.

  • Mr. Henning Schwarzkopf, who lives in Hamburg and on the Riviera, is a lawyer specializing in maritime affairs. He is a member of the GYC and the oldest German Yacht Club, the NRV (Norddeutscher Regatta Verein) from Hamburg.

  • Mr Chris O'Donoghue, from Ireland, together with his wife Kate, is a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco. He is a collector of photography and is passionate about the ocean, sailing and conservation. With a home in St Barts, he is a regular participant in The Bucket.

  • Mr. Jean-Pierre Hennequet, Secretary of the Jury, co-founder of the GYC, and initiator of the project of this Competition. Resident of St Barthélemy since 2003, he is a great lover of photography and in particular of sailing photos and sailing boats (photo library on Pinterest of several thousand photos). He will not take part in the votes.

The members of the Jury, who are not members of the GYC, are:

  • Mr. Nils Dufau, President of the St Barthélemy Tourism Committee, Vice-President of the St Barthélemy Community. Sailing with his family, he is a great lover of photography.

  • Mrs Trifiro, who lives in Italy, has owned or owns with her husband many magnificent sailing boats (such as the Ribelle). She is a member of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, and Judge of the WSA(World Superyachts Awards).

  • Mr. André Labarrère, is a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco, where he is in charge of the archives and library. Member of the jury of " La Belle Classe restauration ". He has a passion for beautiful yachts and their images. Commander (honorary) of the Navy. University Professor.

  • Mrs Julie Diehl, American from Virginia, has a family home in St Barthélemy. Her grandfather sailed the America's Cup around 1905 on his boat. Her sister was the famous Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. Both undoubtedly helped Mrs. Diehl to develop a very keen sense of sailing aesthetics.

  • Sébastien Le Ber, Commodore of the Yacht Club de Porquerolles (France), which organises the Porquerolle's Cup every June. He was also the long time owner of the famous "Domaine de l'île", world-famous for its rosé wine.

  • Mr. Ron Zarella (American, owner and captain of the sailboat Blackfish), former Commodore of the Great Harbor Yacht Club of Nantucket, he is a member of the NYYC. Also a great collector of maritime art.

  • Mrs. Kate Holstein, an American professional photographer who lives in Aspen(Colorado), has a house in St Barthélemy.
