Derbyshire Youth Sailing at Glossop and Combs

by Louise Robertson 28 Jun 2021 05:50 BST 5 & 12 June 2021

Derbyshire sailors have been out in force again for the two DYS series events.

Saturday 5th June saw 19 sailors out at our most Northern location, Glossop Sailing Club. In this idyllic spot, the sun was shining to match the warm welcome from the Glossop team. The sailors faced challenging conditions with very variable and patchy wind, but continued to produce the high standard of sailing and competitive races, which we have seen all year. Congratulations to Arlo Turner (Laser Radial) for winning his home event. 1st Intermediate was Jacob Bennet (Optimist) and 1st Junior was Lochlyn Grant (Optimtist).

The following Saturday, 12th June everyone was back at Combs Sailing Club for the Combs event. In a change from our last visit here for the Toddbrook event, the weather had swapped hail and snow for a dry and very blustery day, with the sunshine making an appearance in the afternoon. There was great perseverance from all 30 sailors who kept going throughout the day, with smiles on their faces, despite many capsizes and even a broken mast.

There was a great range of boats out on the water, including a good turnout of double handers with Graduates, Fevas, GP14s and Hartley 12s. We were very pleased to welcome Tim Hall, RYA Midlands Performance Manager and Patricia Ordsmith, RYA Midlands Sailing Development Officer, who visited us for the day to find out more about Derbyshire Youth Sailing. Many thanks to Tim for providing some great spot prizes. There were some great battles at the front of the fleet between the Laser Radials and the Byte C2. Congratulations to Kate Robertson (Laser Radial) who came out on top to win the event. 1st Intermediate was George Jacobs (Byte C1) and 1st Junior was William Aspinall (Topper).

Next up is our event at Trent Valley where we enjoy the extra challenge of sailing on the river.

For all the results, details of our next event at Trent Valley SC on the 10th July and more please visit www.dysailing.org
