RS Aero Scottish Championships at the East Lothian Yacht Club Regatta

With the RS Aero Scottish Champs reduced to just the first day of the East Lothian YC Annual Regatta as Scotland emerged from its Covid restrictions, a small but refined fleet competed for the title. Three visitors from Northern England and the Isle of Man join three local RS Aeros with a mix of RS Aero 7 and 9 rigs.

A beautiful sunny and warm day in North Berwick saw the light morning westerly fade in advance of the predicted easterly sea breeze just around the start of the regatta! The earlier races were dominated by the RS Aero 9 sailors. By races 3 and 4 the sea breeze was building, allowing the RS Aero 7s to mount more of a challenge. However in race 3 Ffinlo Wright still pulled away to take the win and the title. In the final race Peter Craggs was able to use the building breeze to take the win on handicap in his RS Aero 7.

After an excellent day of racing in amazing North Berwick weather it was Ffinlo Wright from the Isle of Man who emerged victorious in his RS Aero 9 with a string of 1st places to count. The local RS Aeros of Robbie Lawson and Angus Boyd took 2nd and 3rd respectively in a close fought 3 way tussle with Peter Craggs of York Railway Institute SC.

A great day's sailing with something for everyone in the wind conditions. Congratulations to Ffinlo on a dominant performance and thanks particularly to the three visiting sailors who made the journey despite the restrictions and reduced schedule.

East Lothian YC looks forward to hosting an RS Aero traveller again in 2022 when the RS Aeros are able to return in greater numbers.
