It's been a while since we saw VO65's at full bore and while we have seen the IMOCA60s recently in the Vendée Globe, no one was really expecting the opening leg of the inaugural Ocean Race Europe that combines both fleets to be quite such a spectacle.

From flat calm to flat out and then one of the closest finishes we've ever seen, the opening leg of the race around Europe took everyone by surprise. (And the weather outlook suggests that there's a great deal more in store.) Having left the start in France and sprinted down to to The Ocean Race HQ in Spain, Matt Sheahan reports from Alicante on the first of three legs.
