Home club sailor Alex Demurtas leads the fleet towards the finals

After three days of qualifying races and a complete series of seven races completed, the more than six hundred sailors registered for the 39th edition of the Garda Optimist Meeting are preparing to race tomorrow in the finals of the event that to date has kept them busy with varying conditions from the lightest Ora wind to gusts of almost 25 knots.

Leading the Junior fleet towards the finals is Alex Demurtas (2-1), who in today's races has completed an excellent comeback on Quan Adriano Cardi (25-1), leader of the rankings over the first two days and who now enters the finals in second place in the general ranking. Also the Ukrainian sailor Dymtro Karabadzhak (2-19), who qualifies in the Gold fleet as third in the overall standings, recovering a few points, followed by compatriot Alina Shapovalova (DNC-4), fourth overall and first female.

After the only race completed yesterday due to the strong winds, the Cadets completed three races today. In the group reserved to those born in 2011 and 2012, Artur Brighenti (1-2-1) gained the lead which has until now been held by Irene Faini (2-6-3), who enters the finals as second in the general classification. Third place sees the Fraglia Vela Riva sailor Andrea Demurtas (4-5-4).

The finals will start tomorrow at 11am and up to three races will be held. The Cadets will race in a single group, while the Juniors fleet will be divided into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Emerald groups. All athletes will keep the qualifying scores for the preparation of the final rankings. Those qualified for the Gold fleet will compete for the title of winner of the 39th Garda Optimist Meeting.
