Conwy Fife One Design Racing at Royal Anglesey Yacht Club on Sunday

by Mike Hardie 6 May 2021 12:19 BST 2 May 2021

Following on from yesterday's report, I need to make a correction, as Mary was also sailing on 42, with Henry and Son, Although she was quick to point out she had no part in the decision making process on board!

I compose the reports from my memory of events on the day, whilst also trying to compete, so there will always be people missed and incidents unreported and on occasion I may even bend the truth to make a better story. So apologies in advance for any inaccuracies, omissions or downright lies.

On a more serious note, I am going to start today's report with an appeal for help. It would seem that our Race control team (well, Andrew actually) have no chocolate biscuits!! I know that things are difficult for us all in these uncertain and confusing times, but the donation of Chocolate Digestives or Hobnobs would make life so much more agreeable for those poor souls who sit on the line in all winds and weathers, making it possible for us to sail. So dig deep and lets make sure we never again have to face a crisis of this magnitude again, thank you.

7 Fifes came to the line, to enjoy a building SW breeze, with the tide heading towards Puffin at the start. Our Race Officer for the day, Nick Tebbutt and his trusty, well drilled team set an X course of, Hwfa, B10, B12 and B5, this was possibly a little 'sporty' as there wasn't a lot of water about and rounding B12 in company is always a challenge, but Race Officers have to get their pleasure where they can.

As the fleet bimbled about during the prestart sequence, it became clear that a start from mid line to the distance marks was the favoured plan, so we all made our practice timed runs and picked our spots and decided on our strategy. All this meticulous planning descended into chaos however, as the Blue Peter came down a minute early! This threw the fleet into confusion and the shore team into panic mode only made worse by the horn deciding to die at this moment due to lack of gas.

Now the reason for the mistake is unclear, and depends largely upon which of the race team one spoke to after the race, as they all tried to avoid any blame. It would seem that either, A, The Minute hand finally fell of Nicks Mickey Mouse watch, Or, B. somehow the sand had got damp in the Egg Timer, Or, C. The previously mentioned lack of chocolate biscuits, caused Caroline to go to the Spar, thus depriving Nick of his right hand person, I don't think we will ever know the truth.

The fleet meanwhile had started, albeit, not where they planned to and set off to Hwfa, 42 (Family Booth, with Alice enjoying her first sail of the season) were OCS and therefore had to throw a double six and start again. The short beat sorted the fleet out with 5 (Andy & Pete) proving that yesterday's result was a temporary error, rounding clearly in front, followed by 30 (Gwen, Jay & a builder friend) 39 (Gavilar & Annika), 29 (Trigger & G), 38, (Mike and Steve) 42 then 15 (Tak and a young dude, whose name escapes me at the moment)

The beat up to B12, led to 30 and 42 acquainting themselves with the mud banks once again and parking for a while, allowing 39 and 32 to gratefully pick up 2 places.

5 rounded B12 with a clear lead from, 39 and 38 with 29 (obviously missing the tactical nous of Dan TSBMTLY, who had decided to stay at home and torment his sister) 15, 30 and 42 who had both extracted themselves from the muddy embrace of the banks.

This order continued for the next 3 laps without change, whereupon No 5 decided to shed a shroud and had to sadly retire, poor Andy & Pete were not having the best of weekends. This gifted a win to 39 (AKA the love boat) followed by 38, 29, 15, 30, and 42.

So, with racing abandoned on Bank Holiday Monday this gave the following result for the weekend:

1. Mike Hardie - 38 Sard - 4 pts
2. Tak Kershaw - 15 Coila - 5 pts
3. Gavin Morgan - 39 Hywl - 6 pts
4. Gwen Beeken - 30 Coralie II - 8 pts
5. Family Robinson - 29 Gitana - 9 pts
6. Henry Chesterton / Tim Booth - 42 Enigma - 10 pts
7. Family Yates - 41 Fiona - 15 pts
8. Andy Sawyer - 5 Thelma III - 18 pts
9. Alistair Dickson - 18 Carina - 18 pts

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end Sadly this was the final season for Howard Mattocks and number 7, Siglen. Having launched the boat after a complete rebuild in 1989 and sailed it until this season (I make that 33 years!!), Howard having decided its time to 'swallow the anchor'. Posted on 25 Sep 2022

Should have done the lottery! The penultimate race of the season saw the fleet presented with a fairly gentle and variable NW breeze and a building Menai Bridge bound tide. Although the programme suggested a 'long distance race', common sense prevailed. Posted on 19 Sep 2022

Sun, Sand & Sangria, or Spray, Spinnakers & Seasickness as we are in Wales Tourist hordes all over town, Seagulls working overtime intimidating small children and stealing ice creams, Crabs by the pier enjoying a final flight or two before the seasons end, it must be the last Bank Holiday of the season? Last chance to fine tune ahead of the Menai Strait Regattas With Menai Strait Regattas starting on Monday it was a last chance to fine tune the boats before the festivities commences. With 22 boats now on the water, it should be a cracking fortnight, free from the pressures of the 'A' series. Posted on 31 Jul 2022

Forecast - Ffffresh to Ffffrightening As the nation sweltered through the week, the Fife fleet were keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts for Saturday. Surprisingly for once they all seemed to agree that it was going to be windy with 20+ mph being a common theme. Posted on 24 Jul 2022

Glandore weekend - a match made in heaven? Like many sailing clubs the R.A.Y.C. has close links with other clubs formed over many years, with us there is a particularly strong bond with Glandore Harbour Yacht Club, which goes back to a visit to the Classic Regatta in 2005. Posted on 20 Jun 2022

A long and winding road (not!) Following the previous day's Jubilifications, Race Officer Nick and his crew were faced with a difficult decision, with a healthy NE breeze and a lumpy sea evident from Race Control headquarters, it looked like the long distance race was a non-starter. To tea, or not to tea?, that was the question As one would expect with a Royal yacht club, the Jubilee gave us all sorts of ways to celebrate (any excuse for a party). With an afternoon jubilee tea organised (you can tell we are 'posh', the crusts were cut off!!). Posted on 4 Jun 2022
