Cascais 49er & 49erFx Championship - Day 2

by Clube Naval de Cascais 5 May 2021 20:51 BST 4-9 May 2021

On the second day of the 2021 Cascais 49er & 49er Fx Championship, the forty Olympic class boats filled the bay of Cascais with colour to complete the three races planned for the day.

Once again, it was up to the ladies' fleet to start the racing in Cascais Bay. This time the race committee set the course inside the bay where competitors found wind conditions between 10 and 17 knots in intensity but with some shifts in direction. These oscillations gave the Olympic sailors some headaches. The quality of the fleet is impressive since, after 6 races, the winner of each race has been different.

The podium on the second day has shuffled from the opening day where only yesterday's leaders, the French mixed team of Lili Sebesi and Yann Jauvin remain. Moving up to second place is the French mixed team of Kevin Fischer and Dubois Albane. Closing the podium is the Danish team, bronze medallists at the 2019 world championship, Ida Nielsen and Marie Olsen.

The female duo from Singapore, and Cascais residents since the end of 2016, Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low had a great second day with two fifths and one seventh in the three races, rising to tenth position in the general ranking.

With the wind increasing in intensity during the afternoon, it was the turn of the men's Olympic fleet to show their mettle. With the wind already in their twenties, but still with the directional instability of the morning, the American duo composed by Ian Barrows and Hans Henken remained in the lead. The Brazilian duo of Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges rose to second place in the overall standings, two points behind the leaders. Behind them on the podium is the American duo of Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson.

Four continents are represented, America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, with a total of 19 nationalities sailing in the bay of Cascais.

This championship has the support of Turismo de Portugal, Visit Cascais, Cascais Town Hall, Cascais Marina and Vista Alegre. We also have the institutional support of the non-governmental association Sailors For The Sea - Portugal.
