Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta at Southport Yacht Club - Day 2

by Virginia Riddle-Cross 5 Jan 2021 08:48 GMT 4-7 January 2021

The Gold Coast turned on idyllic sailing conditions earlier today for the second round of racing in the twelfth staging of the annual Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta.

Sailing under cloudless blue skies and with the north-easterly sea breeze building in strength, the fleet of 54 yachts made a spectacular sight as they cleared the Seaway at 9 am and headed to the start line.

The wind continued to strengthen as racing progressed and this made for increasing challenges for the skippers and crews. Tactics became increasingly important as the series front-runner, Crankster, Black Diamond and Aramax, tied to consolidate their positions on the points table.

Escalating winds and a large storm cell approaching meant the third race started but cancelled shortly after by the Sail Paradise Sailing Committee, to ensure the sailors' safety.

Yet again the Gold Coast's towering high-rise buildings and magnificent beaches proved to be ideal for spectators, especially when spinnakers went aloft in the conditions and the crews struggled to retain control.

Southport Yacht Club General Manager, Brett James, was enjoying the spectacle: "Considering rain was forecast for earlier today, we were relieved to see these challenging conditions. Every crew was put to the test as the fleet weaved its way around a course."

However, the challenges are set to be different for tomorrow's third day of racing in the four-day series. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting light east-northeast winds and light showers. A strong south-easterly wind is expected to prevail for the final round of racing on Thursday.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants.
