Levi and PMP Design brings the iconic powerboat back to life

The G-Cinquanta, built in 1967, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic powerboats of all time. The combination of the "Sonny" Levi design with the Pininfarina styling and the fact that the owner was Gianni Agnelli, ("G" standing for Gianni, and Cinquanta, (50), standing for the speed in knots), helped make this into a true legend.
The boat was recently sold at auction through Sotheby's for €450,000, and the auction house has described it as the speedboat designed for the "most elegant man on Earth" Fifty years on and Levi Designs and PMP Design, (the latter fronted by Pasquale Mario Passalacqua), have decided to redesign this classic taking inspiration from the past, but at the same time choosing to incorporate the latest modern improvements in design and technology.
This project started in 2016 when Sonny Levi developed a new super-efficient hull with outstanding sea-keeping qualities. The propulsion machinery originally fitted to G-Cinquanta comprised of four BPM Vulcanos - each producing 400hp. With today's more powerful engines it would be unthinkable not to fit a a twin installation.
The timeless beauty of the deep varnished mahogany cold-moulded structure has been replaced with the high-tech toughness of the latest in carbon composite lay-ups.
Despite the recent successes in the car industry such as the Mini, Fiat 500 and the Porsche 911, re-designing a classic is never easy. In each of these cases, including the new G Cinquanta, the initial attractiveness and charm of the designs have been maintained whilst offering the latest in state of the art technology.
