Many media formats have been used to try and explain the leaps between the start of the America's Cup in 1851 through to the present - in the sailing class and technology of the day.

However none bridge the gap quite so well as this piece of virtual reality produced by Animation Research Ltd who first introduced real-time graphics to the America's Cup in 1992, and have been involved in the event since that regatta in San Diego. Since then ARL, based in Dunedin, New Zealand have taken the concept into Golf, Cricket, Motorsports and even gliding, along with many historical applications - able to provide a contemporary view based on the media of the time. More on ARL sports graphics under the Virtual Eye brand can be viewed here youtube.com/user/virtualeyepresenter

As a piece of serendipity the year 1851, the schooner America won what was to become the America's Cup; the city of the current holder, Auckland, New Zealand was founded.
