Brixham Yacht Club hosted the first South West topper event of the season on the 12th and 13th of September generously sponsored by Bayside Marine Chandlery. Thirty-nine children entered and competed, winning an array of prizes at the end. The light wind conditions posed a hard challenge for lots of sailors although this gave some of the lighter sailors a chance to shine.

By the end of the first day, 3 challenging races had been completed with Oliver Hale taking the overnight lead of the 5.3 fleet and local Brixham sailor Thomas Semmens leading the 4.2 fleet, winning 2 out of the 3 races that day. At the end of the second race of the day, the wind dropped dramatically meaning the fleet was held with a short AP postponement which the sailors thoroughly enjoyed giving them a chance to catch up with old friends while remaining socially distanced on the water. Shortly after, the wind picked up again and we ended the day on a nice mild wind race, lifting everyone's spirits!

The second day of the weekend started off with no wind, meaning an early postponement was needed. After about an hour of sitting around with friends, the wind filled in nicely and brought with it some good racing. The wind was a bit stronger than on Saturday meaning that most sailors were more comfortable and happier with the new conditions. This meant more sailors were pushing the line and after one general recall, the race officer made the call to switch to the U flag for the rest of the day, meaning there was time for 3 great races to be completed.

After two days of exciting racing in the warm September sunshine Tilly Phelps from Parkstone Yacht Club emerged as first girl overall with Oliver Hale from Poole Yacht Club as first boy and the 2020 South West Topper Area Champion.

Local sailor Thomas Semmens from Brixham Yacht Club ended the weekend as the 2020 South West Topper 4.2 winner.

Due to the current situation with Covid the overall event had a very different feel to usual but a great weekend was had by all despite this due to all the hard work from the team of volunteers at Brixham Yacht Club and the local class association.
