RC1000 Class Regatta at the Royal Western Yacht Club - Overall

by Keith Davies 15 Sep 2020 20:16 BST 12-13 September 2020

Upon arrival at the RWYC competitors were welcomed by the flags hanging loosely and only a zephyr of breeze from a southerly direction. With confidence in the forecast the race management team set off from the marina towards the middle of Plymouth sound to set up for the day's racing.

Day two of the regatta was to be combined with the RWYC Autumn Series adding to the pressure for Race officer Keith Davies who was accompanied by his wife Nicola and the ever dependable David Taylor. Following a short postponement and reposition of committee boat racing was under way in approximately 6 knots of breeze, firstly with a MORCA fleet on a round the cans course followed immediately by the RC1000 fleet on a Windward leeward course of two laps, and the Autumn series fleet following on the same course. Roy Morgan's HOD35 Sir Ducktion led the way followed in close company by Peter Rowes J109 Ju Kyu in second, with Robert Fletchers Beneteau 34.7 in third clearly trying to make up for the Black flag the previous day.

With Race 2, the final race of the regatta, to be a round the cans race there was a cheer of relief from Sir Ducktion that the course did not involve a leg south of Plymouth Breakwater! The breeze remained stable as about 7 kts and at the first leeward mark all boats rounds within seconds of each other. The HOD35 was again untouchable with Jukyu in second and Muskox in third, with a much improved Adam James' Beneteau First 35 in fourth.

Congratulations to Roy Morgan and crew on Sir Ducktion and all prize winners!

Prizes provided by class sponsors the Royal Western Yacht Club, B&G, Freshwave IT&Web, Ullman Sails, Allspars, Paul Gibbins Photography, PR Systems Marine Electronics, Waypoint Bar and Bistro, Plymouth Yacht Haven, Plym Yacht Club.
